Winston Salem, NC Air Conditioning Repair & Service
The city of Winston Salem NC is known by several nicknames, including “Twin City,” “City of Arts and Innovation” and “Camel City.”
The town of Salem was named for the Arabic word for “peace.” Original settlers were a Moravian congregation and built the town around a central square. The location stands today and is known as Salem Square. Each year since 1772, the Moravian church hosts Easter Sunday Sunrise Service in Salem Square.
The town of Salem was incorporated in 1854. However the area was settled as early as 1759, when a collection of residents from Bethabara purchased land just north of the town to organize and settle a new town.
The town of Winston was first formed in 1849 when the Salem Moravian congregation sold land for the new development. The town was first named “Salem,” but the name was changed in 1852 to “Winston.” The name was selected to honor, Joseph Winston, a local hero.
In the mid-1880s, the U.S. Postal Service began to refer to the two towns as one entity, “Winston-Salem.” After ten years of contention between residents and the post office, the postal service opened the main Winston-Salem post office in Winston. The post office in Salem was then deemed a satellite office of the main station. In 1913, a referendum formally merged the two towns into one named Winston-Salem. However, the postal address system does not recognize the hyphen so the formal name is Winston Salem.
The population of Winston Salem was 229,617 in 2010, according to the U.S. Census. The median income for the city is $41,228 and the home ownership rate is 58.7 percent.
For the first twenty years of its existence, Winston remained a sleepy little town. Then, the railroad came to town in 1872. Also in 1872, the first tobacco warehouse was established by Thomas Jethro Brown. Another entrepreneur, Pleasant Henderson Hanes, built a tobacco factory next to Brown’s warehouse and thus, the tobacco industry came to Winston. The next tobacco factory was built near Hanes’ warehouse in 1875 by Richard Joshua Reynolds. Within a few years, more than 40 tobacco factories could be found in the area. Hanes and Reynolds competed to absorb the smaller companies and capture more market share for 25 years. Finally, in 1890, Hanes sold his properties to Reynolds to begin a career in textiles. The R.J. Reynolds tobacco empire has been a major employer of the residents of Winston Salem from the beginning of the 20th century until today.
